Helensburgh and the surrounding area has seen inter church cooperation over a number of years, which has included that of youthwork and mission. In June 1997 Scripture Union made contact with the ministers in the area.
In Autumn 1997, further meetings and discussions took place with representatives from the churches, who reported that their churches were in favour of a joint effort and that they would support a youthproject in principle. Meetings continued throughout the spring until a charitable trust was formed in May 1998.
The name of the trust is the 'Helensburgh Area Christian Youth Project'. Trustees and managers with an interest and Christian concern for young people have been drawn from the local churches in the area. The trustees take overall responsibility for the project, the day to day management is the responsibility of the Management Group, which meets monthly.
In 1998, the project appointed a single full time youth worker under a co-operative arrangement with Scripture Union. Since then 3 other workers have been appointed in succession, with the last two being appointed jointly in August 2005. It is to the credit of the previous workers and all involved that the trustees felt the project now required one and a half workers.
Funding for the project has come from a number of quarters;namely individual giving (including covenants and gift aid), fund raising, direct support of the churches and refunded tax from the Inland Revenue. In the year 2000, the project adopted the name 'Contraflow
Our youth workers have reluctantly left the project to pursue other inerests. The management committee are actively seeking a replacement and are working hard to keep most of the activities going.
